Day 1 - Mendoza - arrival

On arrival at the airport you’ll be transferred directly to your posada 20km outside Mendoza for the start of your wine tour. Depending on the time of year you book your Argentina trip (harvest time is March - April), you'll see green vineyards as far as the eye can see. Match that with a bright blue sky and warm weather and, were it not for a backdrop of white Andes peaks, you could mistake the place for the south of France. During your Mendoza trip, you’ll be staying in a quiet village with tree-lined cobbled streets and a shady square. Your posada is on the edge of the village and your room is across the garden.

A taxi to the centre of Mendoza costs around US$10 (20 mins drive). Around the Plaza España you can see lots of azulejos, the typical glazed tiles that were introduced by the Spanish. Find a bench on the square and watch the world go by. If you’re looking for a place to eat on your Mendoza tour, head to the lively Plaza Independencia with its many restaurants and bars.

Day 2 - Mendoza - cycling tour along wine bodegas

The Mendoza region is ideal for exploring by car, but driving and wine tasting isn’t exactly the ideal combination.

The fine wines are probably the main reason for coming here, so today on your Mendoza tour you can enjoy the odd glass without having to worry about getting behind the wheel.

This morning you will be collected at your hotel around 9.30am by your guide and cycle through the vineyards to sample some of the regions best wines.

Make sure you have a decent breakfast because at 10.30am you’ll already be sampling a glass of Malbec or Cabernet!

Drinking wine is a social activity, so take your time on the Mendoza trip and enjoy the distinctive wines of each winery and learn more about the area. During your day trip you will visit two wineries, where you will have a guided tour of both. After tasting the various wines available in this area you will have a 3 course lunch along with paired wine in the onsite restaurant.

You can buy the wines you’ll be tasting directly from the bodegas and at around £4 a bottle you’ll be tempted to ship a couple of boxes home to enjoy after your Argentina holiday. The maximum duty-free allowance is 6 litres (8 bottles) per person.

Day 3 - Mendoza - departure

After breakfast it’s time to check out of your hotel, where your Mendoza trip ends. From Mendoza you could fly to Buenos Aires and on to Bariloche for our Patagonia adventure, Iguazu falls tour or south for our Patagonia glacier tour.

If your next destination is Chile, it’s five hours by bus from Mendoza to Santiago de Chile. The route is breathtaking and takes you straight across the mighty Andes with some of the highest mountains in the world including the Aconcagua (6959m), the highest peak in South America.

Your Mendoza tour is a perfect opportunity to spend a couple of days enjoying the outdoors. You can go rafting, cycling or horse-riding or take a day trip to Uspallata. Its unlikely claim to fame is that it served as the location for Seven Years in Tibet starring Brad Pitt.

Mendoza travel tips

The route on your bike tour
Bodgea Escorihuela, on the outskirts of Mendoza is one of the oldest wineries in Argentina. They offer guided tours in English. Bodega La Rural in Maipu has an interesting museum about the region’s wine production. Bodega Trapiche, a short walk from La Rural in Maipu has excellent export wines. Bodega Etchart on the RN40 in Perdriel also exports to the UK and has several award-winning wines.

Best time to travel
Mendoza has an average of 350 days of sunshine per year and a mild climate, so is great to visit all year round. Evenings can get quite chilly so you’ll need a warm sweater or jacket on your Mendoza tour.

Food and drink
In Mendoza Casa Casona on the Calle de los Andes is very affordable and attracts mainly locals. Café Ceinsa on Avenida San Martin has great coffee and snacks.
